Sometimes it can feel hard to balance caring for ourselves with supporting others. On top of that, while some days we might feel on top of the world, on other days we might feel like sh!t. What I love about this daily practice, is that it supports the self & others simultaneously. It's also equally as helpful on the better days as on the rougher days.
Contrary to most motivational talks, I invite you to think small! While it might feel good to care for ourselves by splurging on a pamper day, or to care for others by planning an extravagant celebration - these things are effortful, expensive, and difficult to maintain. How often can we really go on a week-long vacation to Bora Bora in an overwater bungalow? Once in a lifetime - if at all (a person can only dream)? How often can we buy a loved one their dream gift? While big gestures can feel explosively joyous at the time, they are rarely long-lasting, and contrarily might make our every day lives feel even worse, because we're constantly comparing to those explosive highs. Engaging in frequent small Acts of Kindness (AOK), tends to sustainably fuel and refuel our wellbeing. As an added bonus, giving to others is often more joy-giving for the giver than for the receiver of the act.
In 2023, I'll suggest an AOK-a-day to complete. The hope is to make the outer world, and our inner worlds, just that little bit better. I'll suggest a new and different idea each day, because variation and frequency helps keep us engaged and can combat the hedonic treadmill that sees us build tolerance to joy and constantly chase that next best thing (think of the transience of the high you felt when getting that grade, that raise, or buying that item).
Join me for an AOK today, any day, or every day! because you matter, and because other people matter.
Happy Giving |XOX|
