"I doubt if even Shakespeare could find the words to express adequately how I'm feeling right now" - Innocence Project Exoneree
How It Works: The Innocence Project works to free the innocent, prevent wrongful convictions, and create fair, compassionate, and equitable systems of justice for everyone. We often under-appreciate the value and reach of our freedom. I pause here to recognise the many inequities that exist; the different societal power structures which cause varied experiences of freedom for each of us. Freedom is innately so important to us. To introduce a little humour: think of the two year old who tantrums when being buckled into a car seat, and your seemingly adult friends who can barely stand the 'confinement' of plane flights. At the fundamental level, is the freedom to engage with society. One look at the Innocent Project's history page, will feel like a brief dance with an award winning cinematic masterpiece (which in fact, they produced): It includes the exoneration of 375 wrongly convicted people, 21 of whom served time on death row; a book publication, a photographic exhibition at The Guggenheim, contributions to multiple legislative reforms, a an award winning feature film, the creation of the first holistic social work support group to serve wrongfully convicted people post release, a special edition of TIME Magazine to mark Innocence Project's 25th year of fighting for innocence, and in 2020 a Netflix Series! Join the Innocence community by signing up, buying a product (I love my black hoodie! The white sweatshirt looked better but dirtied quickly for me ha), or donate.
Cost: $10+
Why I love it: Freedom is simultaneously a fundamental human need and a privilege.
Happy Giving |XOX|
