AOK Today #39 - Know your Country

AOK Today: Find the name of the First Nations Country you are on (also referred to as the Traditional Custodians / Owners of the land you are on), and advocate for First Nations People to authentically share their ancient wisdom in schools.

"...Australian Aboriginal stories have only recently begun to be taken seriously for what they are: the longest continuous record of historic events and spirituality in the world.” - Karl-Erik Sveiby

How It Works: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures is a story of over 50,000 years of history, rich in diverse cultural traditions that are expressed through songs, dances, stories, rituals, visual art, and other media. Research shows that most young Australians wish they learned more in school about local First Nations peoples, cultures and histories. Know your Country advocates for employing First Nations cultural educators in every primary school to authentically share their ancient wisdom and perspectives, as well as to build authentic, meaningful and long-lasting relationships between Australia’s next generation of leaders and educators, and local First Nations communities. This rich, ancient history is all around us - so get to know the First Nations Country you're on (there are over 250 in Australia - I work on Gadigal land and live on Dharawal land at the moment), and advocate for young people to learn about the rich history of this incredible place we call home by signing this petition.

Cost: Free

Why I love it: I feel so connected to this place, and inherent in that is the gratitude and absolute awe I feel for First Nations People who have cared for it and learnt from it since time immemorial. I love this Kate Constable quote: “The Dreaming is now. The Dreaming is always; forever; it circles around and around. It never ends. It's always happening, and us mob, we're part of it, all the time, everywhere, and every-when too.” The every-when part give me so much peace, though I can't articulate why.
