AOK Today #31 - Sharewaste

AOK Today: Join Sharewaste as a donor or a host

“To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves.” - Mahatma Gandhi

How It Works: In 2011, around 33% of the rubbish in AUS was found to be food organics (including peelings) and about 10% was garden vegetation; this amount of organically-active material buried ‘anaerobically’ (without air) in landfills caused over 3% of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions annually. Sharewaste connects people who wish to recycle their food scraps and other organics with their neighbours who are already composting, worm-farming or keep farm animals. This means organic waste (e.g., food scraps from cooking) is used to recycle essential nutrients back into the soil to make a prolific soil ecosystem and grow produce. Sharewaste brings together hosts (who receive organic material) with donors (who donate their organic material) so you can divert organic waste from landfill, reduce methane gas emissions, all while getting to know your like-minded neighbours! To host, you register and put your compost bin on the map. To donate you follow 3 simple steps: 1. search the map for a nearby host, 2. click on the host icon to bring up their details, 3. send them a message to organise drop off!

Cost: Free!

Why I love it: I don't have a compost of my own, so I love being able to access one locally and look forward to seeing the beautiful produce that comes from it - composting is like giving soil probiotics.
