AOK Today: Sign up for National Superhero Week and be a superhero for Muscular Dystrophy.
"Once you choose hope, anything is possible" - Superman
How It Works: Join me or start your own Superhero Stride team to action the hope of curing muscular dystrophy. To date there is no cure for any form of MD and some conditions are life-limiting or can lead to degenerative disability. People can receive a diagnosis at any age, with more than 40,000 Australians living with MD, and similar, rare conditions. Dressing up as a superhero is powerful in and of itself! Identifying with a character’s positive qualities can give us a greater drive to succeed or greater focus (depending on superhero v lab-coat outfits). A 2017 study showed dressing as a superhero increased children's perseverance with homework - Yep! Batman perseveres hard. Dressing up also assists with self-distancing. For example: when we’re feeling under pressure and engaging in obsessive analysis… mental separation (which yes, dressing up can do!) helps people “transcend the... situation and take on a more distanced perspective.” It's also incredibly fun! Sign up today and get your gear off to be a Superhero for a stride.
Cost: Free to sign up! It's the people supporting you that donate/contribute to the fundraiser ;)
Why I love it: Supporting a cause while having fun and is a delightful duo. Every year during the City to Surf, I enjoy watching the moment the first superman crosses the finish line. There's something about the magic, excitement, story, and community that we universally experience in the world of superheroes. I also love seeing children's eyes light up and their transformation when embodying the role.
Happy Giving |XOX|
